Historical Society Volunteer Orientation

hello

Historical Society President Sam Ensley and other staff members welcomed seasoned volunteers and newcomers to the orientation.

Ensley talked about different areas where volunteers are needed including everything from masonry and landscaping workers to museum tour guides. Volunteers were urged to choose positions according to individual interests and skills. Ensley said, “Volunteers don’t have to commit to long hours. An hour here or a couple of hours there is greatly appreciated.”

Ensley also told about three new exhibits that are currently underway at the Historical Courthouse including a Union County Sports and Recreation exhibit, an Indian artifact exhibit, and a Union County Music exhibit. All three will be extraordinary additions to the museum.

The Union County Music exhibit will feature artifacts and records by Union County songwriters and performers including Fred Rich and other local personalities. One of Earl Johnson’s fiddles will be on display (a painting of it currently hangs in the Mock House).

The Historical Society utilizes staff and volunteers to host numerous events throughout the year, to run the museum, and to help in the gift shop. The Mountain Marketplace, the Bluegrass Festival, the Friday Night Concert Series, and decorating for Christmas are just a few of scheduled activities planned for 2008.

The Union County Historical Society is actively seeking donations for the Elevator Project. An elevator is needed so that elderly and handicapped visitors can get upstairs to the courtroom. When finished, the elevator will be a much welcomed addition to the historic building. All donations are tax deductible. For more information, please call the Historical Society at (706) 745-5493 or visit the website at www.unioncountyhistory.org.
