Blairsville Cruisers First Cruise In - A blast from the past

hello

Blast from the Past

September 6, 2006 - The Blairsville Cruisers welcomed a large crowd to a free evening of fun over Labor Day weekend 2006. Beautiful automobiles were parked all around town square for guests to admire. With the Historical Courthouse as a backdrop, visitors mingled among some of the finest automobiles in the southeast. It was like a scene right out of the 50's.

"It's a lot of fun." Said Wayne Tanner. "The day's turnout exceeded all our expectations." The first Blairsville Cruisers' cruise-in was definitely a success.

Tommy Jones with winnerHundreds of out-of-town "tourists" enjoyed the show. Many local citizens also came out to see the cars. Mayor Jim Conley was spotted admiring a bright red mustang. A favorite among the women was a 1969 royal blue Camero.

With all of the activity it wasn't possible to get all of the Cruisers together, but finally an opportunity came for a "partial" group shot. Johnny Carroll, David Hughes, Ralph Gillespie, Larry Swanson, and Wayne Tanner were five of the hard workers that helped make the event a success.

Local citizens organized the informal event. Besides the show of fine automobiles, the cruise-in offered raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and music by the newly named band, The Booger Hollow Gang (with musicians and singers from Harmony Grove Baptist Church). Their country gospel sound was the finishing touch that set the mood for the evening.

Blairsville Mayor Jim ConelyTommy Jones, one of the original Blairsville Cruisers, presented Miss Nicole Lovell of Blairsville with a raffle prize of $50, donated by Appalachian Community Bank. Wayne Tanner, another original Cruiser, presented a check for $188 to Scott Jones of Acworth for winning the 50/50 drawing. Congratulations to Nicole and Scott!

All of the Blairsville Cruisers would like to give a special thanks to Appalachian Community Bank, United Community Bank, Seasons Bank, and all of the merchants and businesses for the wonderful items donated for the door prizes. They also extend a hearty thank-you to the Union County Historical Society for their participation and the use of the courthouse.

Blairsville CruisersPlans are underway to hold the cruise-in on a monthly basis. The next meeting of the Blairsville Cruisers will be at Blairsville Restaurant on October 5 th at 7:00 PM. At that time there will be a discussion to decide which charity organization will benefit from the proceeds of the 50/50 drawing.
