The recent recycling event
at Union County Primary
School collected 10,538
pounds of used electronic
equipment, including 46
computer monitors, 83 personal
computers, and 37 televisions.
Over 70 cars and trucks
brought stuff to the recycle
event. Many citizens of
Union County took advantage
of the free recycling program.
Leslie J. George, Executive
Director of the North Georgia
Resource Management Authority,
was in charge of the event.
She explained that this
solid waste authority is
made up of North Georgia
Counties for the purpose
of promoting safe solid
waste handling through education,
recycling, and composting.
Electronic items are weighed
and re-marketed by Atlanta
Recycling Solutions. With
over 15 years of experience,
ARS has developed a network
of 50-100 buyers of surplus
electronic equipment.
ARS's most important criterion
in marketing used equipment
is to assure that buyers
are reputable users of re-marketed
items, and will themselves
dispose of equipment that
they cannot use by recycling,
or by environmentally conscious
disposal.
Members of the Union County
High School Beta Club were
present to help. They did
a terrific job. Kristin
Heuker, Nathan Sprayberry,
Jason Reid, and Nick Graphman
accepted computers, monitors,
printers, televisions, stereos,
speakers, microwave ovens,
fax machines, telephones,
VCRs, DVD players, radios,
and cameras. These 11th
graders worked hard to help
unload the vehicles and
to prepare the items for
transport. (The Beta Club
participates and coordinates
various events throughout
the year such as the Shamrock
Sale fund-raisers, Thanksgiving
baskets for the needy, and
Christmas baskets for children.)
Thanks
to Leslie George, the Beta
Club, Union County teachers,
and other volunteers, the
recycling event was a success.
George says, "Hopefully
this is the first of many
such recycling events in
Union County."
