October
18, 2006 - The local Home
Depot recently sponsored
their Annual Kid's Fire
Safety Event. The event
is a fun day with exciting
projects for children and
adults. Over 130 kids participated
in this year's festivities.
A highlight of the day
was a visit by Smokey Bear.
Children and adults were
glad to see their furry
friend.
Tips were offered to children
on fire safety. Advice to
never play with matches,
always have an adult to
help with cooking projects,
remind parents to check
batteries in smoke alarms,
and practice an escape plan
regularly was stressed.
Safety lessons included
what to do if your clothes
catch fire. Stop, drop,
and roll is easy to remember
and extremely effective
in emergency situations.
Many agencies and businesses
contribute to the success
of the event including Union
County Fire and Rescue,
Union County Ambulance Service,
Georgia Forestry Commission,
Blairsville Police Department,
Blairsville Fire Department,
Union County Sheriff's Department,
the Georgia State Patrol,
various literacy programs,
Rescue Air, the North Georgia
News, Blue Ridge Mountain
Electric Membership Corporation,
Coca-Cola, The Griddle Café,
Rib Country, Kentucky Fried
Chicken, Ingle's, Wendy's,
Burger King, and Mountain
View Funeral Home. Thanks
to all that participated
and sponsored the event.
Blairsville and the community
would also like to express
their gratitude to Home
Depot for hosting this yearly
event. The Home Depot Associates
work hard to prepare for
the Kid's Fire Safety Day.
Kevin and Frances do an
excellent job of keeping
everything running smoothly.
Everyone would like them
to know that it is appreciated.
