May
13, 2008 - Each year the
Georgia Municipal Association “If
I Were Mayor” essay
contest encourages over
4000 sixth grade students
to dream about leading their
cities and hometowns. Blairsville
Mayor Jim Conley recently
visited Denise Driskell’s
6 th grade class to recognize
this year’s essay
winners and participants.
Mayor Conley says, “The
essay contest is all about
the kids. I enjoy giving
them the recognition they
deserve.”
For the past 5 years, Ms.
Driskell’s class has
had a District 2 winner.
This is quite an accomplishment!
Only one winning essay is
selected from each of GMA's
12 districts. Winners receive
a $250 savings bond and
are recognized at a special
awards luncheon. Although
there was not a top place
District 2 winner this year
from Union County, there
were 5 students in Ms. Driskell’s
class that received honorable
mentions. Josh Anderson,
Darian Colbroth, Zach Markham,
Reagan Hooper, and Josh
Dyer were applauded by classmates
and onlookers as their names
were announced.
According to the GMA website, “The
contest gives students a
chance to creatively use
grade-specific language
arts skills and civics/social
studies knowledge.” Ms.
Driskell’s sixth grade
students are certainly up
to the challenge! Congratulations
to Denise Driskell and every
student that participated
in the “If I Were
Mayor” contest.
