Distinguished member of
the community, Carlton Colwell
recently celebrated his
80 th birthday with family
and friends. Many local
people turned out to wish
the former Union County
State Representative a happy
birthday.
Colwell's family planned
the "surprise party" in
secret. Daughter Carla said, "He
thinks he's going to a fundraiser
dinner." The event remained
a secret until Colwell's
arrival, when family and
guests greeted the surprised
guest of honor with a round
of applause. Carla added, "I
hope no one's feelings are
hurt. We couldn't send formal
invitations or Dad would
have found out. We really
wanted to surprise him."
Colwell is well known for
his contributions to Union
County including his work
in the Georgia Legislature.
Colwell is responsible for
many improvements to Union
County. He was instrumental
in helping transfer ownership
of the former Union County
Bank building to the Union
County Public Library. Many
of our finest buildings
owe their existence to Carlton
Colwell.
The birthday party was
held at the Southern Tree
Plantation. BBQ and all
the fixing's were served
up by Catfish Corner. Tommy
Townsend's Band provided
Bluegrass music and entertainment.
Everyone had a wonderful
time with good food, good
music, and good conversation.
