Union County Nursing Home supports US TroopsBy Janice Boling June 2, 2011 - Residents at Union County Nursing Home like to keep busy. Forget silly busy work, they want to make a difference in people’s lives! A recent program helps them do just that. When Mrs. Louise Wimpey mentioned doing something for her grandson, the idea of sending him a quilt was mentioned. It soon became a reality. Mary Newton, Behavior Management Director, began by piecing together a quilt top to donate to the project. Mary, Mrs. Wimpey, and approximately 10 other residents worked to stitch together the layers. Many other people wrote notes of encouragement and signed their names on the quilt top squares. The beautiful quilt, cards, and other letters will soon be shipped overseas to Mrs. Wimpey’s grandson LCpl John Wimpey Cagle, Jr. He is a United States Marine currently stationed in Afghanistan. Mrs. Wimpey says, “John has been in the service a year now. He joined up right after graduation from Chamblee High School. We are so proud of him for becoming a Marine. Maybe this quilt will be like a little bit of home. Isn’t he handsome in his dress blues?” Many residents and staff signed the quilt. Mary Newton adds, “Everyone including ambulance drivers wanted to sign the quilt. It is a labor of love.” Nursing home resident Carol Davenport wrote, “From one vet to another.” Cathy Stiles wrote, “Marines are the greatest folks in the world. Thanking God for you today. God bless and protect you.” Ms. Newton adds, “Getting the quilt ready took about a month. We plan to do more of these quilts and already have several names on the waiting list. It might take a month or it might take a year to get the next one done. Either way, this project is more than just a fun activity. It’s something worthwhile.” |
