August 28, 2010 - Free hugs at Young Harris Art Festival in Towns County
The 1st Young Harris Art Festival was a huge success. With over 70 artist and food vendors, the juried event offered everything from fine art, pottery, and jewelry to home canned jellies and hand knitted scarves. There were even free hugs! Friendly faces, great weather, and a beautiful location made for a great festival.
The Young Harris Arts Festival included a baking and canning contest. Hundreds of entries were on display. Denise Reese won 1 st Place in the baking contest for her Lemon Velvet Cake. It was fabulous! All proceeds from the baking contest went to the Towns County Food Pantry.
Young Harris Mayor Andrea Gibby, Young Harris College President Cathy Cox, Brasstown Valley Resort’s Charles Burton, Promoters Robin and Lee Roberts, and other warm hearted folks participated in the Free Hugs phenomena where free hugs are offered to all takers. This extra detail made for a friendly atmosphere.
The 1st Young Harris Art Festival was well attended with people from all over the southeast. One visitor said, “Young Harris is a great little town. We are already planning to come back later in the fall. This is true southern hospitality at its best.”
